Revisiting happiness measurements: the challenges of quantitative research

The evaluation of well-being or satisfaction, frequently conceptualised as happiness, constitutes a pivotal aspect of sustainable development goals (SDGs). This is primarily due to its capacity to provide a more extensive and integrated perspective on human prosperity compared to conventional economic indicators like gross domestic product (GDP). However, current happiness quantitative research faces several challenges. This study conducts a narrative review, synthesizing existing literature to provide a broad overview of current knowledge, theories, and methodologies. This flexible approach allows for a critical exploration of diverse perspectives, identification of literature gaps, highlighting of key findings, and suggestions for future research directions. The review identifies core challenges in quantitative happiness research, including conceptual diversities influenced by a complex historical evolution and varying philosophical foundations. Methodological challenges include diverse measurement tools, the impact of multiple confounding variables, and the integration of big data and AI in happiness quantification. Researchers should prioritise the development of culturally sensitive tools and frameworks for measuring happiness. Leveraging advancements in big data and AI technologies, while being mindful of their limitations, can provide more accurate and comprehensive measures of happiness.
