Exploring the role of hand gestures in AR/MR remote collaboration for industry: A state-of-the-art review

Mixed Reality (MR) technology, an umbrella term encompassing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), offers unparalleled opportunities for advancing remote collaborative industrial tasks, specifically, assembly, maintenance, and training. In this review, we provide a systematic examination, thorough exploration, and forward-looking perspective on the role of hand gestures in AR/MR remote collaboration for industry, addressing both technological advancements and practical implementations. The role and promise of AR/MR remote collaboration using hand gestures in industry are discussed from local and remote user interfaces, gesture instructions, and hand gesture interaction. Finally, key prospective avenues for research are highlighted, focusing on the positive effect of hand gestures in human-computer interaction and visual instructions. This review aims to serve as a valuable resource for AR/MR remote collaboration-focused studies and industrial adoption in the near future.
