Effects of beet pulp on growth performance, intestinal health and bile acid metabolism of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides)

A 56-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary beet pulp (BP) on growth performance, intestinal health, and bile acid metabolism in juvenile largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ). Six isoproteic and isolipidic diets (designated as BP0, BP3, BP6, BP9, BP12, and BP15) were formulated to contain 0 %, 3 %, 6 %, 9 %, 12 %, and 15 % BP, respectively. Following random allocation, a total of six dietary treatments were established, each containing juvenile fish with a mean initial body weight of 10.72 ± 0.01 g. Although dietary BP inclusion at 3 %-6 % exerted no significant effect on growth, the 3 % inclusion level enhanced intestinal function by: (1) increasing the activities of amylase and superoxide dismutase; (2) up-regulating the transcription of genes encoding Occludin, Claudin-4, and ZO-1; and (3) modulating inflammatory responses through elevated IL-10 expression. Meanwhile, hepatic bile acid homeostasis was effectively regulated through the FXR-SHP signaling axis. In contrast, dietary BP levels exceeding 9 % significantly impaired growth performance, exacerbated intestinal oxidative damage, down-regulated Claudin-4 expression, and up-regulated TNF-α. Moreover, 15 % BP inclusion induced cholestasis, resulting in severe liver damage and functional impairment.
