With the frequent occurrence of extreme events like droughts in an era of climate change, lake area is affected to varying degrees, and urbanization will exacerbate this effect. Long-term complete high spatiotemporal resolution lake area dataset is the basis for exploring the response of lakes to extreme events, and image pixel pollution is the major problem limiting the accuracy of surface water identification. In this study, an image pollution pixel filling algorithm was proposed to construct a monthly lake area dataset in China, and we then evaluated the spatiotemporal variation of lake areas from 2000 to 2021 and their driving mechanism. The results showed that the constructed lake area dataset has high accuracy (NSE = 0.99, RMSE = 84.33, RRMSE = 8.02%). Lake area of Chinese lakes showed a significant upward trend (26.55 km2/month, P < 0.01), and there is significant spatial heterogeneity. Moreover, our results showed that 85% (326 in number) of lakes are impacted by drought, and lakes in the southeastern side of the Heihe-Tengchong Line are affected by both drought and human activities. Additionally, the fluctuation area of lakes is significantly correlated with the lake area affected by drought (r = 0.95, P < 0.01), and drought is an important reason for the fluctuation in lake area.
