We report substrate-induced superconductivity in rutile RuO 2 thin films. By controlling the film’s crystal structure through epitaxial growth on differently oriented TiO 2 substrates, we observe superconductivity at 2.1 K exclusively in films grown on (110) TiO 2 . This superconducting phase, characterized by a coherence length of ξ 0 = 13.9 nm, correlates with a structural transition from P 4 2 / mnm to Pcab . First-principles calculations confirm this symmetry reduction ( D 4 h 14 → D 2 h 15 ) in (110) oriented films, demonstrating the critical role of lattice symmetry and bond anisotropy in enabling superconductivity in RuO 2 .
