A planar ultra-wideband (UWB) dual-polarized dipole antenna is proposed for Sub 6 GHz base station applications. The proposed antenna features a simple planar configuration that incorporates several innovative components design: terminated open dipoles with optimized tuned patches, parasitic elements, directors, and an integrated balun feed structure. Detailed theoretical analysis shows that the combination of a novel terminated open dipole structure and specially designed tuning patches enables UWB characteristics. Incorporated parasitic elements and directors significantly enhance radiation pattern stability and high gain performance. The antenna is fabricated using simple low cost printed circuit board technology, also the simulated and measured results are very consistent. The tested results show that the -10 dB bandwidth is 1.7-5.3 GHz (102.9%) with isolation of more than 30 dB in most operating bands. A stable average gain of more than 9.2 dBi is achieved. Moreover, stable radiation patterns and low cross polarization discrimination are achieved. A linear antenna array is designed for industrial applications, and experimental results show full parametric UWB characteristics, which exhibit system significant promise for future wireless communication systems.
