Effect of different proportions of animal and vegetable oils in waste cooking oil on properties of rejuvenated asphalt

Waste Cooking Oil (WCO), as a food processing waste with diverse sources, exerts varying influences on the properties of rejuvenated asphalt due to its complex composition. The absence of standardized recycling processes further compounds these inconsistencies. To resolve this, this paper categorized WCO into animal-derived and vegetable-derived oils, employing thermo-oxidative aging to simulate aged asphalt. Optimal WCO dosage was determined through conventional physical tests before evaluating rejuvenated asphalt properties. Frequency response characteristics, temperature sensitivity, and fatigue performance were assessed using DSR, BBR, and LAS tests, while FTIR analyzed functional group changes. Results demonstrate that increased animal oil proportions significantly enhance high-temperature performance. Conversely, vegetable oil components improve low-temperature flexibility and fatigue resistance, with the finding that a 10 wt% 0.2V + 0.8A WCO blend restores key indicators of aged asphalt to matrix asphalt levels. This optimized ratio establishes a scientifically validated recycling standard for sustainable pavement rehabilitation .
