This chapter aims to summarise current knowledge on the biogeochemistry and cycling of nitrogen and phosphorus in different wetland types including peatlands and floodplains with a particular focus on i) biological nutrient uptake, ii) organic matter decomposition and nutrient remobilisation and iii) redox processes, sorption and sedimentation. Much of our knowledge has been generated from research in constructed wetlands over more than 50 years. However, some of the key processes considered had already been described more than 100 years ago. Understanding of biogeochemical processes is an important prerequisite both for modelling nutrient removal in wetlands and, eventually, for prioritising, planning and successfully implementing wetland restoration measures and designing their sustainable management. However, the large heterogeneity of soil properties in space and time and the complex hydrology and knowledge gaps regarding microbial dynamics and functioning still cause large uncertainties in the assessment and prediction of nutrient cycling in all types of wetlands.
