The investigation of seepage failure and disaster modes for water diversion tunnels passing through water-rich ultracataclasite strata has scientific and engineering significance for disaster prevention in underground engineering. Seepage failure laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the effects of the seepage pressure and thickness of the water-blocking rock mass on disaster duration, evolution of the seepage pressure in the surrounding rock, and the mass of water and mud outflow. The disaster modes and stage characteristics of seepage failure during laboratory tests on the surrounding rock for a tunnel in a water-rich ultracataclasite stratum were analyzed. The relationships among the disaster duration, dry mass of the particles and hydraulic gradient were investigated. According to the test results, three types of disaster modes were identified: failure by water inrush, mud inrush, and collapse of the excavation face. Images of the process of seepage failure of the excavation face and the curves of the seepage pressure vs experimental time indicate five stages with important characteristics. The thickness of the water-blocking rock is negatively correlated with the dry mass of mud outflow, positively correlated with the duration of the experiment, and inversely proportional to the seepage pressure. A correspondence between the hydraulic gradient and the type of disaster mode was established. The critical hydraulic gradients for the disaster mode transitions are 3....
