Energy is an indispensable substance for human survival and development, and exploring new energy systems is crucial for sustainable energy development. Hydrogen energy has attracted much attention because of its abundant resources, high calorific value of combustion and cleanliness. Hydrogen storage technology is a key factor in the steady and efficient development of hydrogen energy. In recent years, research results on hydrogen storage materials have been emerging, and it is worth noting that hydrogen storage technologies based on solid-state hydrogen storage materials (SHSMs) have developed to a relatively advanced stage. For example, Mg-based hydrogen storage materials have shown high hydrogen storage capacity, but further improvements are still needed in terms of hydrogen absorption and desorption conditions. The AB 5 and AB 2 type hydrogen storage alloys have shown certain application potential, but further improvement of their hydrogen storage capacity is still needed. This review systematically predicts the future trends of SHSMs through in-depth studies of hydrogen reaction mechanisms, thermodynamic and kinetic properties, improvement strategies, and application scenarios, and it aims to provide researchers with new methods for designing and synthesizing high-performance SHSMs.
