An Eye-Tracking Analysis Based on Virtual Reality (VR) Technology: A Study on Satisfaction with Urban Historical District Renovation

With the rapid acceleration of urbanization, assessing satisfaction in historic districts is an important aspect of urban regeneration. The sample was categorized into four groups based on the extent of building renovation: Classic Style Group, Blended Style Group, Simplified Style Group, and Modern Style Group. Visual behavior was quantified and analyzed using virtual environments and eye-tracking technology. The CSG and the BSG demonstrated great visual appeal and pleasure owing to their intricate ornamental details and cultural components, whereas the MSG excelled in functional usability but exhibited diminished overall visual appeal. Moreover, gaze behavior had a substantial correlation with contentment, while cultural ambiance and aesthetics were the primary determinants of enhanced satisfaction. This study validates the efficacy of employing virtual environments and eye-tracking technologies to evaluate the effects of architectural renovations in historic districts, offering a scientific foundation for the assessment of neighborhood landscape design.
