Recently, the field of ophthalmology has experienced significant advancements with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The proliferation of AI technologies frequently presents ophthalmologists with the dilemma of selecting the most suitable approach tailored to their research aims and data types, while computer experts may struggle to understand how these methodologies can be effectively applied to achieve objectives in improving eye health. This review offers valuable insights and guidance to both ophthalmologists and computer experts to bridge this gap and promote collaborative synergy between these two distinct domains. The analysis entails the structural characteristics, specific use cases, clinical objectives, and evaluation metrics of these methods. Additionally, emerging paradigms such as semi‐supervised learning, attention mechanisms, federated learning, reinforcement learning, and large language models are introduced. These paradigms enhance model performance, ensure patient data security, and facilitate personalized treatment strategies and resource optimization in complex ophthalmic tasks.
