Abstract To design and optimize the piezoelectric quasicrystal (PQC) SAW devices, a comprehensive investigation of surface waves, including Rayleigh and Love waves, in PQC layered structures with a weak interface is conducted. A hybrid Legendre−Laguerre polynomial method is employed to analytically address wave dynamic equations for PQC layered structures with a weak interface, breaking the limitation of the traditional Laguerre polynomial method (TLPM). The interaction influence between the piezoelectric effect and weak interface effects on the wave characteristics is analyzed. Some new phenomena are revealed: The weak interface in the phonon and phason field weakens the stiffness, while the weak interface in the electric field enhances the stiffness. Furthermore, these influences primarily occur at frequencies with serious dispersion. The weak interface effect weakens the piezoelectric effect of the phonon modes for Love waves. The results lay a solid foundation for designing and optimizing PQC SAW devices.
