The escalating global demand for sustainable energy necessitates the development of renewable, low-carbon alternatives. Microalgal oil, classified as a third-generation biofuel, exhibits considerable potential for energy conservation and emission reduction due to its high oil yield, rapid biomass growth, and effective CO 2 sequestration, thereby outperforming first- and second-generation biofuels. This review critically evaluates recent advancements in the conversion of microalgal oil into eco-friendly biofuels. It begins with a classification of various biofuels, highlighting the advantages of algal oil. The principal components of algal oils are examined, alongside innovative extraction methodologies and essential chemical processes, with a particular emphasis on hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Developments in HDO catalysts tailored for microalgal oil are discussed, focusing on enhancements in conversion efficiency and selectivity through advanced active sites and carrier materials. The industrial-scale conversion landscape is analyzed concerning operational efficiency and scalability. Concluding, the review outlines future research directions, underscoring the necessity of continued innovation to effectively integrate algal oil biofuels into sustainable energy systems.
