Wind vector products from WindRAD on FY-3E are evaluated and compared with HSCAT and ASCAT products using buoy observation over the northern South China Sea. The collocation between wind vector products and buoy observations is constrained to a time difference of less than 10 min and a spatial separation of less than 25 km. The evaluation reveals that WindRAD products achieve root mean square errors (RMSEs) of approximately 1.2 m s−1 in wind speed, with biases close to zero, and RMSEs of about 37° in wind direction, with biases below 3.6°. Similar to HSCAT and ASCAT products, WindRAD products exhibit higher accuracy in wind speed at medium environmental wind speeds (5–15 m s−1) with lower RMSE and near-zero bias. However, positive biases are observed at low environmental wind speeds (0–5 m s−1), and negative biases occur at high environmental wind speeds (≥15 m s−1). Among the WindRAD products, WindRAD_Ku product (retrieved from Ku band) performs slightly inferior to WindRAD_C (C band) and WindRAD_Dual (dual band) products, as it shows larger RMSEs and biases in both wind speed and direction under most wind speed conditions. The WindRAD_C product generally outperforms WindRAD_Dual product in wind speed, particularly at low (0–5 m s−1) and high (≥15 m s−1) environmental wind speeds. Overall, WindRAD products perform better in wind speed than HSCAT product but slightly less well than ASCAT product. However, WindRAD demonstrates superior performance in wind speed at low (0–5 m s...
