The spectacular land rush and its consequences in Ethiopia

The media and academia monitoring the global land rush have been interested mainly in the corporate-level operational land deals. While that is important, it captures only a small part of how the global land rush and the social forces behind it evolved and manifested on the ground. This perspective often overlooks pin prick land deals as well as the in-between category, i.e. neither large-scale nor pin prick, which are also crucial elements of the land rush. Though they are done on a relatively smaller scale, they are quite widespread, and when aggregated, the total land area involved could be large-scale, contributing to the commodification and commercialization of land more broadly. Through an empirical investigation of such cases in Oromia region of Ethiopia, I argue that pin prick and the neither large-scale nor pin prick land transactions, combined, have a comparable impact on local communities to that of the corporate-level deals.
