BACKGROUND: Glucose oxidase (GOD) has been extensively applied in the animal feed industry. However, its substrate specificity limits its utility in the broad degradation of fibrous raw materials. RESULTS: In this study, a series of spore display technologies were employed to transform GOD from an enzyme specific for β-d-glucose into a broad-spectrum sugar oxidase capable of catalyzing various sugars such as arabinose, xylose, sucrose, cellobiose, raffinose, and sorbitol. Notably, the relative enzyme activities for arabinose, xylose, and sorbitol increased from less than 5% to 71%, 52%, and 53%, respectively. Furthermore, the optimal temperature for GOD activity shifted from 30 °C to 60 °C, significantly improving its thermal stability. CONCLUSION: Enzymes with high activity, strong heat resistance, and the ability to catalyze various sugars can help reduce the accumulation of hydrolysis products in animal feed, improving the cost-effectiveness of the feed. This contributes to the advancement of sustainable agriculture and the further development of feed production. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.
