The development of ideal wound dressings with superior properties represents a critical demand in wound management. In recent years, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) has garnered significant attention as a high-value material for biomedical applications. Due to its exceptional biocompatibility, low toxicity, and functional versatility, carboxymethyl cellulose has emerged as a promising candidate for developing hydrogel-based wound dressings. This review systematically examines the potential of carboxymethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose-derived hydrogel dressings as advanced wound care solutions, emphasizing advancements in performance metrics and multifunctional applications, including self-healing capabilities, pH responsiveness, and sustained drug release. Furthermore, we comprehensively summarize recent progress in carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogel biomaterials for wound dressing applications and propose strategic prospects for future development to enhance the clinical translation of CMC hydrogel systems.
