Status and Trends of Coral Reefs of the Pacific: 1980–2023 is the most comprehensive regional assessment of Pacific coral reefs produced by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), an operational network of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI). Drawing on more than 15,000 surveys from over 8,000 sites across 30 countries and territories, the report provides a detailed analysis of changes in hard coral cover, coral community composition, algal dynamics, and sea surface temperature over four decades. The findings show that regional average hard coral cover remained relatively stable at 25.5 percent from 1990 to 2022, although major bleaching events in 1998 and 2014–2017 caused significant declines in some areas. The report documents shifts towards more resilient massive coral species, increases in macroalgae, and a regional rise of +0.82°C in sea surface temperatures between 1985 and 2023. These trends highlight both the resilience of many Pacific reefs and the mounting pressures driven by climate change, cyclones, and local stressors. The assessment offers evidence-based recommendations to strengthen long-term monitoring, improve data accessibility, and support effective policy and management across the region. It serves as a key reference for governments, scientists, and practitioners working to safeguard the future of Pacific coral reefs.
