Open education recognition systems are transforming how skills and competencies are validated across formal, informal, and non-formal learning environments. This literature review examines current practices in open recognition, with particular emphasis on micro-credentials, digital badges, and open educational resources (OER), while specifically exploring their application and potential in climate education. The analysis reveals significant potential for these systems to bridge academic learning with professional demands and environmental action, particularly through competency-based approaches. However, persistent challenges in standardization, technological integration, and stakeholder collaboration require attention for these systems to reach their full potential. This review aligns with the OpenPass4Climate (2022-1-FR01-KA220-HED-000089354) Erasmus+ project's goals of fostering sustainable, inclusive education systems by synthesizing key contributions, identifying challenges, and proposing recommendations from researchers in the field. Notable findings include the growing importance of micro-credentials for validating climate adaptation skills, the value of open badges in recognizing interdisciplinary competencies essential for environmental action, and the need for integrated qualification frameworks that can accommodate both formal and informal learning pathways in sustainability education. The review concludes by highlighting promising practices in Nordic regions where...
