Exploring the coupled coordination dynamics between new urbanization (NUR) and urban ecological resilience (UER) is of great significance in promoting high-quality and sustainable urban development. In this study, the entropy weight method, coupled coordination model, and Local Spatial Association Indicator (LISA) time-path analysis, combined with spatio-temporal leapfrog assessment, were used to conduct an in-depth study of NUR level and UER conditions in 108 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB). These tools contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the temporal evolution and spatial distribution patterns of NUR and UER within the YREB. The results of the study show that: (1) the NUR level and UER of the YREB generally show an increasing trend from 2005 to 2021; (2) the coupling coordination levels of NUR and UER also exhibit a consistent upward trajectory spanning from 2005 to 2021; (3) the NUR and UER of the YREB show significant spatial heterogeneity and the emergence of multicenter and multi-regional spatial characteristics; (4) most of the cities in the YREB have greater stability in the direction of dependence, stronger urban spatial cohesion, and certain path dependence or locking characteristics. The findings presented in this study have significant implications for fostering harmonious urban development, bolstering ecological protection, and guiding rational urban planning. This study contributes to advancing sustainable development strategies and p...
