Rethinking talent cultivation for carbon neutrality: a case study of higher education reform in China

China’s “dual carbon” goals necessitate reforms in the higher education system to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with green development competencies. While existing literature predominantly focuses on carbon neutrality technologies, policy pathways, as well as educational investments and returns, this study centers on the driving value of talent cultivation in the dual carbon field for achieving carbon neutrality. Using Southwestern University of Finance and Economics as a case study, we construct a horizontal-vertical analytical framework integrating green economy theory, education for sustainable development theory, and regional coordinated development theory. This framework systematically examines how interdisciplinary integration, curriculum system restructuring, and university-enterprise collaboration can foster professionals aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The study proposes a “Interdisciplinary Integration × Curriculum Reform × University-Enterprise Synergy” talent cultivation paradigm, offering a reference pathway for emerging economies to balance international standards with localized practices. Additionally, it highlights the need to address common challenges in global dual carbon education through interdisciplinary certification mechanisms, “hybrid-driven” university-enterprise partnerships, and localized curriculum adaptation.
