Site-specific neuronal and motor effects of short-term intermittent burst deep brain stimulation in non-human primates

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) effectively treats the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD), however, clinical outcomes vary across patients1 and its effects diminish quickly after stimulation cessation. Novel stimulation patterns have been explored and some were shown to have the potential to improve the acute effect of DBS2–4. Recently, a promising approach, i.e., intermittent burst DBS (ibDBS), was developed by the Gittis group in dopamine-depleted mice5,6. This is a novel stimulation pattern that has the potential to improve clinical outcomes by targeting specific neural circuits and inducing motor improvements that persist after stimulation cessation (carryover effect).
