Design and Fabrication of a 3D Printed See-through Optical Combiner

The large-scale production of augmented reality (AR) waveguides presents substantial challenges attributed to their fabrication complexities. Here, we introduce an innovative and cost-effective methodology for fabricating geometric optical combiners expressly tailored for AR applications using 3D printing techniques. Additionally, we have optimized the conventional geometric waveguide design to enhance ease of fabrication. Our proposed method obviates the necessity for molding, dicing, and post-surface polishing following the printing process. A prototype has been demonstrated, showing the integration between virtual images and the real-world environment. The proposed method has the potential to be adapted for mass production.
