Addressing traffic safety and platoon stability problems in mixed traffic scenarios has attracted increasing attention. This paper employs a desired safety margin model to establish a new manual vehicle (MV) model that considers drivers’ subjective perception errors. Moreover, a new connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) model has been developed which incorporates the effects of multivehicle information perception. The effect of the penetration rate of CAVs on the stability of vehicle platoons in mixed traffic conditions was investigated by the proposed mixed models. It indicated that CAVs can enhance the stabilization of mixed vehicle platoons. Two categories of local mixed vehicle platoon were proposed. Stability conditions of the local mixed vehicle platoons are obtained using the transfer functions of the mixed platoon system. Feedback gain coefficients for vehicle platoon control are obtained for different local mixed vehicle formations. Results indicate that the categories can improve the stability of mixed traffic.
