Floristic characteristics and regionalisation of karst woody plants in China

China's karst region, known for its unique biodiversity, presents significant challenges in understanding the distribution patterns of woody plants due to its vast expanse and rugged terrain. This study integrates newly obtained species composition data from over 100 karst sites in China with extensive data from previous surveys and reference materials. The research identified 2 kingdoms, 3 subkingdoms, 11 regions, and 20 subregions within China's karst woody plant flora, following the framework of the ‘Floristic Regionalization of China'. The study describes the geographical extent, vegetation composition, floristic characteristics, and typical taxa for each region and subregion. The analysis of floristic sources across different regions indicates that China's karst woody flora is a mixture of several palaeofloras, particularly the Tethys Tertiary and Palaeotropic palaeofloras. These findings significantly enhance our understanding of karst biodiversity and can aid future research and conservation efforts in botany and ecology.
