Abstract Deforestation turns intact forests into fragments and creates edge forests. These edge forests experience degradation due to edge effects and may become vulnerable to climate extremes such as drought and fire. Estimating carbon dynamics in fragmented forests requires accurately mapping these edge forests, along with incorporating degradation processes into ecological models. Understanding the evolution of fragmented forests is crucial for designing effective forest management strategies to mitigate potential risks from climate extremes.
