Research Funding, Social Responsibilities, and Nursing Knowledge Generation

With all the news on recent political changes including the drastic upcoming changes in the National Institute of Health (NIH),1-3 I was thinking of the impact of research funding on nursing knowledge generation. Indeed, research grants have been essential for nurse scientists and scholars to survive in the academia because they have great impacts on their promotion and tenure process.4 Subsequently, nurse scientists and scholars have tried to ensure grant funding for their research programs and scholarly works, which consequently influence the directions of nursing knowledge generation. Whenever there were changes in the funding priorities and funding amounts by funding agencies, especially by the National Institute of Health (NIH) including the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), nursing faculty members’ research programs have been greatly impacted.5 With the previous funding priorities on symptom science, palliative care, and symptom management by NINR, a number of nurse researchers have chosen these areas for their research and have developed their research programs accordingly. With an emphasis on genetics, genomics and omics, many senior and junior nursing researchers jumped into the areas and participated in the necessary workshops and training sessions and incorporated them into their research programs.
