• High concentrations of KPhi inhibit the overgrowth of new shoots in peach trees. • 3.3 g·L −1 KPhi improves stem strength and effectively slows down shoot growth. • KPhi induces an increase in protopectin and cellulose content in new shoots. • KPhi enhances lignification of new shoots by up-regulating lignin synthesis genes. • KPhi reduces GA production by suppressing the expression of GA synthesis genes. Potassium phosphite (KPhi) is a new phosphorous and potassium fertilizer for increasing crop yield and disease resistance and is involved in the regulation of plant growth and development, but related research regarding fruit trees is limited. To explore the effect of KPhi on new branch growth in peach ( Prunus persica ) trees and its potential regulatory mechanism, KPhi of varying concentration was sprayed onto two-year-old “Luhong 618” peach trees. Low-concentration (1–2 g·L −1 ) KPhi promoted new branch growth in peach, while high-concentration (3.3–10 g·L −1 ) KPhi significantly slowed new branch growth. With increasing KPhi concentration, the photosynthetic rate, photosynthetic pigment content, and photosynthetic product content first increased and then decreased. Compared with the control, 3.3 g·L −1 KPhi treatment not only inhibited new branch growth but also didn't damage photosynthesis in leaves, and the stem strength of new branches treated at this concentration was the highest. Measurement of cell wall components showed that treatment with 3.3 g·L −1 KPhi signif...
