Industry-oriented roadmap for lithium plating detection from short to long term

Lithium plating directly affects the fast-charging ability and safety of electric vehicles. However, existing lithium plating detection methods cannot meet the industry's needs for timeliness, quantification, and robustness, which seriously restricts the development of electric vehicles and emission reduction. This article provides suggestions for the future development of lithium plating detection methods in different periods of time to support the revolution of the next-generation electric vehicle batteries. • The gap between existing lithium plating detection methods and industry expectations are systematically presented. • Using specific current excitations is suggested to achieve zero cost in-situ lithium plating detection in short term. • Providing early warning of lithium plating before it occurs is recommended to replace detection. • The attidude towards lithium plating is suggested to be switched from passive avoidance to proactive modulation.
