An integrative review of healthcare professionals’ experiences in caring for women who have experienced psychological birth trauma or birth related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

• This is the first review to explore, collate and synthesise the experiences of healthcare professionals (HCPs) whose remit is the care of women who have suffered psychological birth trauma and/or birth related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). • The findings of this review are timely given the significant morbidity and mortality associated with perinatal mental health disorders. • This review revealed that providing care to women who have experienced psychological birth trauma and birth related PTSD is a challenging and complex task for HCPs. • Coordinated multidisciplinary and multiagency training and education initiatives are required for HCPs, with emphasis on prevention, detection and support of psychological birth trauma and birth related PTSD among affected women. • Development of policy in relation to psychological birth trauma and birth related PTSD should focus on a standardised, streamlined service with clear communication and referral pathways. A significant proportion of women worldwide experience childbirth as a traumatic event, which may result in enduring consequences for themselves, their partners and their children. Healthcare professionals have a key role in supporting women with psychological birth trauma and birth related post-traumatic stress disorder through prevention, early detection and supportive practices but evidence indicates that these phenomena, are not recognised by practitioners.
