Alkali-activated metakaolin-blast furnace slag cementitious materials (AAM-BFSCMs) utilize the respective properties of the two precursors, show desirable workability, considerable mechanical properties and excellent durability, and are considered as potential substitutes for Portland cement , with a vast array of engineering applications . Nevertheless, the insufficient volumetric stability of AAM-BFSCMs has largely limited their application and popularization in engineering, thus the study of their shrinkage behaviors has become a focus of interest. A comprehensive review on shrinkage properties of AAM-BFSCMs is presented based on a large amount of literature. This paper begins from the study of their drying shrinkage mechanism, and the existing common drying shrinkage theories are sorted out and summarized in terms of surface energy, disjoining pressure and capillary pressure to reveal their drying shrinkage behaviors. Subsequently, a recapitulation focused on the current status of research on shrinkage properties is conducted to comment on research progress and trace research frontiers. Moreover, various physical and chemical mitigate strategies used to improve shrinkage behaviors are systematically examined and summarized, the corresponding shrinkage reduction mechanisms are revealed, and their scope of applications and limitations are addressed. Eventually, the rationalized proposals for improving shrinkage behaviors are proposed and a reasonable outlook on future resea...
