• Meander restoration projects are effective in flood mitigation in the long term during low-intensity floods. • Projects higher in the catchment appear to show broader benefits in reducing the flood area than lower. • Consolidated projects reduce high-velocity flood areas more effectively than dispersed projects. • Meander restoration projects are usually beneficial and economically justifiable, but improper project design and spatial coordination may result in negative impacts. • Maintenance and coordination between projects are essential to sustain the flood mitigation effects.
