The growth of degrowth: An umbrella review of evidence synthesis in degrowth research

Background: Degrowth, a concept challenging the pursuit of economic growth due to its ecological and social contradictions, has evolved from a grassroots movement into a formal academic field. While the literature on degrowth has grown exponentially, there is limited analysis of how reviews in this field synthesise and advance knowledge. Critics argue that degrowth research lacks rigorous methodologies, reflecting the limitations of orthodox economic frameworks in conceptualising alternatives to growth. This systematic review protocol aims to map the intellectual landscape of degrowth and post-growth literature, evaluate the methodological quality of existing reviews, and assess their contribution to understanding social-ecological transformation. Methods: We will systematically synthesise degrowth and post-growth literature reviews using best-practice frameworks for the conduct and reporting of umbrella reviews. Searches will be conducted across multiple bibliographic databases, including Web of Science Core Collections, Scopus, and The Lens, as well as grey literature sources, using tailored and tested search strings. Inclusion criteria focus on reviews with explicit methodologies addressing degrowth and post-growth topics. Screening will involve title/abstract and full-text assessments against predefined inclusion criteria, with checks among reviewers to ensure consistency.
