In Chapter 1 some of the basic properties of partial differential equations were outlined. It is obvious from the accompanying discussion that the parabolic equations play a substantial role in many branches of science and engineering. Consequently much effort has been devoted to establishing efficient and accurate numerical methods to solve such equations. Many of these are now presented in Chapter 2 .
