Decoding the mechanisms influencing public acceptance of carbon dioxide capture and storage technology in China

Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) technology plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change, making it essential to understand the key factors influencing public acceptance of CCS technology. This study comprehensively analyzes the impact of different information dissemination methods on the acceptance of CCS technology among the Chinese public. The study conducted an in-depth analysis of data from 1313 respondents using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and employed the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to validate the evaluations from 13 experts. The results indicate that the Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) effect is the most critical factor influencing public acceptance of CCS technology, followed by Recognition of Utility (ROU).Success case information significantly enhances public acceptance of CCS technology, while risk information, although increasing awareness, also heightens concerns. This study provided valuable insights for developing strategies to improve public acceptance of CCS technology. • Trust in science and technology boosts public acceptance of CCS. • Recognition of CCS utility and NIMBY effects are key, with NIMBY having the greatest impact. • Income, gender, and age indirectly affect CCS acceptance through mediating factors. • Promote successful CCS cases, address NIMBY issues, balance risk and benefit information, and educate different demographics.
