Anti-penetration properties of negative Poisson’s ratio honeycomb sandwich structure filled with foam

The ballistic responses of negative Poisson’s ratio honeycomb sandwich structures filled with aluminum foam are investigated using numerical simulation method. The residual velocity of the projectile, the energy absorption, and the failure forms of the sandwich structures are systematically analyzed. The influence of the impact position and incidence angle of the projectile, wall thickness, and concave angle of honeycomb, as well as the thickness of the front and back sheets of the structure on the penetration resistance is discussed. The results show that the foam-filled honeycomb sandwich structure has a better penetration resistance than the foam core sandwich structure with the same areal density, and the penetration resistance of the foam-filled honeycomb sandwich structure can be improved by designing its geometric parameters.
