Unveiling soil microbial community dynamics in desertification: A case study from the tianshan mountains, xinjiang

• Specificity of microbial diversity in desertified soils: This study finds that the microbial community in the desertified soils of the Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang, exhibits unique diversity, with the relative abundance of the Acidobacteria phylum being significantly higher than in other desert soils. • Clear stratification in the vertical distribution of microbial communities: The study reveals a distinct stratified distribution of microbial communities in desertified soils with increasing soil depth, showing a decrease in the abundance of the Bacteroidota phylum with depth. • Low diversity and structural vulnerability of surface soil microbial communities: Compared to subsurface soil, surface soil microbial communities exhibit lower diversity indices and weaker ecological network connectivity, indicating potential impacts of environmental stress on microbial community structure. • The complexity of microbial networks in subsurface soil as an ecological transition zone: Subsurface soil exhibits complex microbial ecological networks, like characteristic of ecological transition zones. It indicates that rapid changes in environmental conditions significantly impact microbial community structure. • Close association between microbial community structure and environmental factors: The study results indicate that the structure of soil microbial communities is significantly negatively correlated with total organic carbon (TOC) content.
