Dual Role of the Entomopathogenic FungusBeauveria bassianain Insect Pest Management in the Greenhouse

With the development of agricultural production, greenhouse pests have become an important factor hindering the safe growth of crops. The extensive use of chemical pesticides for their control has led to increasing resistance in greenhouse pests. Therefore, the development of biological agents is imminent and has become a hot topic in research. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) have a direct lethal effect on pests but can also inhibit the occurrence of pests and diseases as plant endophytes. Using EPF as endophytes for pest and disease control provides potential advantages compared to traditional ways because they colonize the plant internally by artificial inoculation and thereby stay protected from environmental stresses and fluctuations. This chapter takes Beauveria bassiana as the main focus and reveals the multiplicity of the EPF B. bassiana in greenhouse pest control, including the direct lethal effect and multiple effects as plant endophytes. First, we summarize the application status, lethal mechanisms and challenges of using B. bassiana in greenhouse pest control. Second, we describe the multiple roles of endophytic B. bassiana , including promoting plant growth, inhibiting the occurrence of plant diseases and insect pests, and providing safety to other natural enemies. In addition, the interaction mechanisms between EPF and plants, and the internal mechanisms of pest control are also discussed.
