Overview of Metal Additive Manufacturing Technologies

Additive manufacturing (AM) generally refers to the technologies that make products by building materials up layer by layer, that is, additively, rather than subtracting material from a large block of preexisting material as in traditional manufacturing and machining. At present, AM technologies are used for a broad range of applications in the engineering industry, aerospace, defense, architecture, medicine, toys, and entertainment. This chapter provides an overview of metal AM technologies, starting with their history, followed by the introduction to several specific metal AM methods and the corresponding processing principles. Powder bed fusion (PBF) and directed energy deposition are more widely adopted for AM of metals compared to binder jetting and sheet lamination. According to ISO/ATSM 52900, PBF is generally defined as an AM process in which thermal energy selectively fuses regions of a powder bed.
