using the vaginal excision pig model. The results showed that the collagen scaffold loaded with vaginal epithelial and smooth muscle cells significantly promotes the reconstruction of the vagina compared with small intestinal submucosa (SIS) membrane or bare collagen scaffold. Notably, the reconstructed vaginal tissues exhibit remarkable similarity to their normal counterparts, encompassing not only the vaginal epithelium and smooth muscle but also the intricate networks of blood vessels and nerves. These compelling results underscore the feasibility of a tissue engineering approach in vaginal reconstruction, offering promising prospects for improving the quality of life in affected individuals.
