Environmental input–output analysis

Input-output analysis offers a suitable approach to study not only the interdependences inside the economy but also the interrelationships between the economy and the environment. This capacity is due to input-output flexibility to (1) combine monetary and physical units, (2) incorporate different assumptions more compatible with environmental policy objectives, and (3) analyse environmental problems at different levels (i.e., a single firm, economic sectors, a whole country, or the world) within the same approach. This entry describes the standard input-output tables and its environmental extension that allows to compute the so-called full basic input-output model emphasising those characteristics that can be useful for environmental input-output analysis in general.
