Based on the wide electrochemical window, good thermal stability and designable performance, ionic liquids can be a promising electrodeposition medium. This review introduces the development history, system composition and important scientific issues of electrodeposition using ionic liquids, and summarizes the research progress in recent 15 years. The electrodeposition process of metals and alloys in five different types of ionic liquids is mentioned, including halogen metalate ionic liquids, air- and water-stable ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, metal-containing cationic ionic liquids and proton-containing ionic liquids. We put emphasis on different regulatory factors such as deposition conditions (current density, deposition mode, deposition time, temperature), electrolyte composition (anions, cations, metal salts, additives, moisture) to the morphology, composition, microstructure, and properties of electrodeposit. Subsequently, the electrodeposition of semiconductors in ionic liquids is highlighted. Finally, the issues existing in the basic theory and technology of electrodeposition in ionic liquids are pointed out, and their future development in the field of electronic industry is discussed.
