In state legislatures, women of Asian American or Pacific Islander (AAPI) descent are also winning elections and rising to political power with 77 women of Asian or Pacific Islander women serving in state legislatures as of 2022. The author&s;s aim to investigate how Asian American and Pacific Islander women navigate the racialized and gendered political landscape when serving in political leadership roles. They start by clarifying how they use the term AAPI women at the outset of our chapter. Nevertheless, they argue that AAPI women occupy a unique space in the gendered and racialized space in the political landscape, and our research provides a crucial starting point for investigating these dynamics. They argue that this penalty will not deter AAPI women from emphasizing their gender because of the particular raced-gendered stereotypes associated with AAPI women.
