With advances in electronics, industry, and manufacturing, the demand for highly integrated, flexible, and thin sheet products has increased. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a material widely used in the production of fibers and films. However, the polar ester groups in the PET backbone limit its hydrophobicity, making it unsuitable for oil-water separation and self-cleaning applications. To address this limitation, techniques such as surface grafting and magnetron sputtering have been utilized to enhance the hydrophobicity of PET products while maintaining their excellent mechanical properties, chemical stability, and electrical insulation. These advantages have great potential in environmental protection, medical, chemical and other industries for high-performance oil-water separation, self-cleaning, and membrane distillation materials. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest hydrophobic modification strategies and applications of PET fabrics and films, with a special focus on the effects of preparation techniques, functional components, and microstructure on wettability and hydrophobic durability. Finally, challenges and opportunities for future research in this area are also discussed.
