Digital Twin - How to understand the Post-Mining Processes

Summary Understanding the phenomena occurring after the closure of mining activities is the challenge of modern times. Mining operations have an impact on the surrounding environment not only during the operation, but also after closure. To fully understand the post-mining processes, it is necessary to use all available sources. These can be mining, geological, hydrological, topographical maps and boreholes, which can be used to create a subsurface model of the geological structure, which, in combination with satellite observations and drone flights, makes it possible to represent but above all to understand the phenomena that are part of the post-mining processes. This paper presents an example of the integration of multi-source data for the closed Prosper-Haniel mine, located in the Ruhr area. The aim of the paper is to show that the integration of a geological structure model together with remote sensing observations can provide a methodology for understanding post-mining processes.
