X-irradiation of the cells simultaneously sets in motion the processes of repair and damage. Therefore, whether the cells live or die depends upon the relative dominance of the repair or damage process. Although it had been known for a long time that irradiated cells repair 92 damage, Elkind and Sutton-Gilbert 1 were the first to quantitatively define the repair processes in mammalian cells.
