This chapter introduces the research background, key concepts, research methods and main content of each chapter. The government’s positive urbanization policy is one of the main driving forces for China’s rapid urbanization. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, this state-led urbanization has further evolved into a “city management” model integrating land, finance and banking. Encouraged by the policy “balancing the increase of urban construction land and the decrease of rural construction land”, a large number of villages were demolished, cultivated land was centralized, and peasants went to live in apartments, which led to the widespread emergence of “village-turned-communities”. This book tries to explore how the village-turned-community rebuild the grassroots organizational system and the community order from the perspective of space reconstruction, organizational reconstruction and order reconstruction of new urban grassroots units. This study selected several “village-turned-communities” in Beijing, Linyi City of Shandong Province, Wuhan City of Hubei Province, and Kunming City of Yunnan Province as the cases. The main research methods used in this study are extended case study, comparative study and semi-open questionnaire survey.
