Hybrid processes integrating photocatalysis and membrane separation offers an exciting technology because both methods outperform and overcome the challenges of other. The photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) combined with built-in photocatalytic functionality have captivated the scientific attention during recent years. The membrane offers the in situ degradation of organic contaminants with enhanced membrane permeability flux and separation in one step thus minimizing the environmental and economic impact without compromising green chemistry principles. The performance of these novel reactors largely depends upon the effective distribution of catalytic sites and morphological control of photocatalyst film. Herein, we summarized the basic mechanism of photocatalytic activity associated with PMRs. The dependence of reaction kinetics on the operational condition of the reactor has been discussed. The types of photocatalytic membranes and reactor configurations have been discussed. The membrane fouling control as well the treatment of different wastewaters in PMRs is highlighted. Finally, the most important factors affecting the performance were described.
