The use of laparoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of sex development in children

Objective To investigate the value of laparoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) in children.Methods From February 2010 to June 2012,32 patients with hypospadias and cryptorchidism underwent evaluation and treatment by laparoscopy.Out of these,12 patients were diagnosed as DSD.The diagnosis and treatment of these patients were retrospectively analyzed.Results At evaluation,all patients underwent laparoscopic removal of gonads and/or ductal structures incompatible with the socially chosen gender.Urethroplasty was performed 6 ～ 9 months after laparoscopic gonadectomy.There were no intra-operative or postoperative complications.All patients recovered well during 2 to 16 month follow-up (mean 12.5 months) with good cosmetic outcomes.Conclusions Laparoscopy is a good approach for diagnosing and treating patients with DSD Key words: Disorders of sex development;  Gonads;  Laparoscopy
